Sapphire Crystal Glass
Born from the crystallization of pure aluminum oxide at high temperatures, sapphire crystal is a synthetic engineering product, not directly taken from nature like natural sapphire glass. However, with increasingly sophisticated manufacturing technology, the quality and durability of sapphire crystal are as strong as natural sapphire, and the price is also cheaper than natural sapphire. Therefore, many watches, especially upper end watches, choose sapphire crystal glass as their primary watch glass.
Mineral Glass
Often used for middle-low and low-end watches, this glass is cheaper than sapphire crystal. The lower price does not mean that its quality and durability are also lower than sapphire crystal. Although not as hard as sapphire crystal, mineral glass is quite hard for daily use. Also, the material will not shatter into pieces if accidentally bumped; it will only crack.
How to Differentiate Between the Two?
The easiest way to differentiate them is by reading or asking about the specifications of the watch you want. For sapphire crystal, you can often see the words sapphire crystal on the watch dial. Another way is by comparing the temperature of the glass; sapphire crystal glass will be colder than mineral glass.
Additionally, you can also perform a water drop test. When water is dropped on sapphire crystal, it will bead up where you dropped it, whereas on mineral glass, the water will immediately disperse and spread out. There is actually another method, which is a scratch test, but Watch Studio does not recommend this test as it can damage your watch.
