How to clean leather on bags, wallets, watch straps, and sofas.

Cleaning leather is certainly different from cleaning human skin. Most of us understand that leather is durable. However, this does not mean that leather does not need to be cared for and cleaned. Whether visible or not, stains, smudges, layers of dust, and everyday dirt can still cling to leather items.

You can follow the practical tips below on how to care for leather bags or wallets. First, read the care label of your leather bag and wallet to avoid mishandling.

  • Mix clean water or mineral water and a mild soap, such as facial cleanser or delicate laundry detergent, in an 8:1 ratio. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle.

  • Spray onto a clean cloth or sponge—it's even better if you use a microfiber cloth. Avoid spraying directly onto the stain as it can make the area too wet.

  • Wipe the stain gently along the grain of the leather. Avoid scrubbing!

  • Once the stain is gone, let the bag or wallet dry naturally, away from direct sunlight.

  • Once dry, polish with a leather conditioner to protect it.

Tips for caring for leather with natural ingredients

Some kitchen ingredients are effective and safe for cleaning leather, but always try them first on a small, hidden area. Lemon juice is good for removing stains, while vinegar can be used to keep leather looking pristine. Natural oils, such as olive oil and coconut oil, are also good for helping maintain leather's shine and moisture.

  • When cleaning stains on leather bags or wallets, wipe along the grain of the material.

  • Do not use tissue paper to clean leather sofas as tiny fibers can stick to the leather.

  • Natural ingredients like vinegar, lemon juice, and olive oil can help clean leather.
